For example, the popular Nike athletic shoes that sell for US$73 to $135 around the world are produced by 75,000 workers employed by independent contractors in low income countries. A substantial portion of these workers are in Indonesia–mostly women and girls housed in company barracks, paid as little as 15 cents an hour, and required to work mandatory overtime. Unions are forbidden and strikes are broken up by the military. In 1992, Michael Jordan reportedly received $20 million from the Nike corporation to promote the sale of its shoes, more than the total compensation paid to the Indonesian women who made them.

La tesi di fondo: crescita economica e liberismo godono di tale venerazione nella nostra cultura che raramente troviamo il coraggio di chiederci perché dare loro precedenza sopra ai bisogni della gente e della natura. Bisogna sempre chiedersi il perché.

Ieri al Conservatorio di Milano concerto del violoncellista lettone Misha Maisky (al pianoforte Alan Weiss), con il seguente programma:

Elemento importante dei concerti di Maisky è l’abito, sempre e solo in scintillante shantung di seta plissettata, sempre rigorosamente diverso tra primo e secondo tempo: ieri prima giacca gialla su camicia e pantaloni neri, poi senza giacca con polo a maniche lunghe nera e pantaloni grigi.

Dovendo scegliere tra espressione e dizione, mi pare che Maisky scelga senz’altro l’espressione. E così non mi è mai piaciuto il suo Bach, troppo enfatico, quasi “Busonizzato” se mi passi il termine equivoco… Ieri poi il pianista lo ha sistematicamente coperto (quando vedo che il piano è stato semichiuso, sospetto subito la prevaricazione: perchè Bruno Canino lascia il piano aperto e non copre il violino? perchè è bravo!).

Senz’altro mille volte meglio la seconda parte del concerto, il novecento, dove Maisky si è potuto scatenare con tutto l’impeto romantico di cui è capace, lirismo cantabile e percussioni jazz di grande fascino.

Come bis: Polonaise di Chopin e Vocalise di Rachmaninov, bellissimi. Pubblico foltissimo, folla in delirio. A parte Bach, concerto stupendo.

Il mondo del volo a vela è un piccolo mondo di appassionati, dappertutto ma ancora di più in Italia, dove le condizioni meteo-orografiche sono propizie mentre quelle burocratico-amministrative sono invalidanti.

Si sperava molto che i campionati mondiali assegnati a Rieti per il 2003 avrebbero rappresentato un momento di rilancio e di diffusione di questo sport affascinante. Ma di fronte al totale immobilismo degli organizzatori italiani (l’AeCI diretto dall’Avv. Mario Testa era troppo occupato a decidere come spartirsi la torta), il comitato internazionale ha deciso che i mondiali 2003 si terranno in Polonia. Nel nostro piccolo, una bella figura di merda! Questo il comunicato ufficiale:

From IGC:

On the 24th of April the IGC President Tor Johannessen and Vice President Brian Spreckley met with the organising committee for the 2003 WGC at Rieti. During the meeting serious flaws in the preparations for the 2002 preparatory event became evident. The preparatory event was scheduled for August only three and a half months away.

• There was no functioning Championship director
• no information bulletins had been sent out
• no invitations had been sent out
• no web site was established for the event
• no system for entering the contest had been established

Consequently, NACs had no possibility to enter teams in the event and many are now unable to make arrangements to do so.

It is an IGC requirement that the NAC awarded a WGC shall organise a Preparatory Contest one year ahead of the WGC. This is to prove that the organising staff is proficient and that the participants have the possibility to acquaint themselves with the conditions locally and in the contest area. The contest shall as far as possible be run under the same rules and conditions and at the same time of the year as the main event.

As the local conditions in Rieti due to the mountainous terrain are quite special, the preparatory contest is believed to be of greater importance than in venues with flat terrain. The absence of a preparatory event with the possibility for the competitors to get acquainted in the area significantly affect the chances of the 2003 WGC being a fair contest, competitors unacquainted with the area will suffer a significant disadvantage.

Based on the lack of preparations for the 2002 Preparatory Contest, the IGC Bureau has decided that the venue for the World Gliding Championships in 2003 will be moved to Leszno in Poland instead of Rieti in Italy.

Nota che nel bilancio 1999 la Regione Lazio aveva stanziato per l’anno seguente “2 miliardi per per l’aeroclub di Rieti, al fine di rendere la struttura perfettamente efficiente per i campionati mondiali di volo a vela del 2003. Sono previste opere per l’ammodernamento ed il potenziamento delle strutture esistenti, della flotta aerea, nonché la realizzazione di impianti e strutture per l’accoglienza dei visitatori.”

Il guru dell’usabilità Jacob Nielsen, nel suo “Designing Web Usability” che ho appena finito di leggere, dice cose giuste, cose ovvie, e anche cose un poco datate. Lo ha scritto nel 1999, ossia nella preistoria di internet: è incredibile la quantità di cose che sono cambiate da allora.

Per favore non raccontarlo in giro, ma il lavoro di consulente informatico mi mette a volte nella scomoda posizione di uomo-medicina, in una zona nebbiosa tra l’esperienza, la balla grossa, l’improvvisazione e la psicologia. Con faccia seria e voce profonda recito il cerimoniale e dico le incantazioni, ma in fondo affido le mie speranze a un CTRL+ALT+CANC.

Per cui ho particolarmente apprezzato l’ultima pagina del libro, dove Nielsen nota:

Today, the average computer user lives under a reign of terror where he or she is subjected to loss of data at the whim of a blue screen that appears at unexplainable times. We have lost 2000 years’ of progress in rationalist thinking and reverted to superstitious and animist behaviour where users chant magic incantations at their computer without understanding the meaning but hoping that the outcome will be blessed. Look at offices around the world and count the number of yellow sticky notes at the side of computer monitors and you will know what I mean. Each sticky note has a magic incantation on it with a number of steps that are followed as an offering to the Great Machine. If step 5 in printing handout from a slide presentation were to sacrifice a goat, then people would do that just as gladly as they click on a checkbox they don’t understand.

The computer industry even acknowledges the unknowable and magic nature of their creations by using metaphors like “wizards” when they want to wave the wand over particularly obtuse designs.

The Internet Society is launching a new campaign to facilitate access to and use of Internet everywhere. The campaign slogan is “Internet is for everyone,” but there is much work needed to accomplish this objective.

Qualsiasi governo che valga almeno la carta con cui è stato votato dedicherebbe tutti i suoi sforzi a questo scopo. Come dire che esistono argomenti più urgenti dell’articolo 18 (e questo vale per il Berlusca come per il Cinese).
