Essam Al-Ghalib, corrispondente di guerra di Arab News, armato di telefono satellitelare, macchine fotografiche e PC portatile, si è intrufolato in Iraq e racconta da Umm Qasr:

When we finally made it to Safwan, Iraq, what we saw was utter chaos. Iraqi men, women and children were playing it up for the TV cameras, chanting: “With our blood, with our souls, we will die for you Saddam.”

I took a young Iraqi man, 19, away from the cameras and asked him why they were all chanting that particular slogan, especially when humanitarian aid trucks marked with the insignia of the Kuwaiti Red Crescent Society, were distributing some much-needed food.

His answer shouldn’t have surprised me, but it did.

He said: “There are people from Baath here reporting everything that goes on. There are cameras here recording our faces. If the Americans were to withdraw and everything were to return to the way it was before, we want to make sure that we survive the massacre that would follow as Baath go house to house killing anyone who voiced opposition to Saddam. In public, we always pledge our allegiance to Saddam, but in our hearts we feel something else.”

La guerra te la raccontano, in dettaglio e senza peli sulla lingua, i Russi. Ad esempio ieri:

“…Following nervousness and depression [of the Iraqis] during the first days of the war we can now observe a burst of patriotic and nationalistic feelings. …There has been a sharp increase in the number of Iraqi refugees, who left the country before the war, returning to Iraq. A “cult of war” against the US and the UK is now emerging among the Iraqis…”, the report states. [Reverse translation from Russian]

[Coalition] analysts believe that if this attitude of the Iraqis is not changed within the next 7 days, a “resistance ideology” may take over the Iraqi minds, making the final [coalition] victory even more difficult. In response to this report the US Army Psychological Operations command decided to combine all Iraqi POWs into large groups and to distribute the resulting video footage to the world media. A more active use of the Iraqi opposition was suggested for propaganda work in the occupied villages. The same opposition members will be used to create video footage of the “repented” Iraqi POWs and footage of the local [Iraqi] population “opposing Saddam.”

“Today we can see that in itself massed use of strategic and tactical precision-guided weapons did not provide the US with a strategic advantage. Despite the mass use of the most sophisticated weapons the Americans have so far failed to disrupt Iraqi command and control infrastructure, communication networks, top Iraqi military and political leadership, Iraqi air defenses. At the same time the US precision-guided weapons arsenal has been reduced by about 25%.

The only significant advantage of the precision-guided weapons is the capability to avoid massive casualties among the civilians in densely populated areas.

What we have is an obvious discrepancy between the ability to locate and attack a target with precision-guided weapons and the power of this weapon, which is not sufficient to reliably destroy a protected target.”

Cinquemila anni di cultura e di storia non sono passati invano. Il Maestro Yang dell’ Associazione per lo Studio del Kung Fu Tradizionale è un signore di mezza età, piccolino e dai modi molto gentili, che ha dedicato e dedica la sua vita allo studio delle arti marziali. Oggi pomeriggio è stato invitato nella nostra palestra a Como per tenere uno stage e insegnarci le sue tecniche.

I concetti chiave che ha cercato di trasmetterci (in un italiano assai approssimativo) sono:

• Le diverse tecniche non sono importanti e fondamentalmente si equivalgono.
• La forza non serve a niente e non bisogna cercare la forza.
• I movimenti possono essere piccoli, ma le partenze devono essere veloci.
• L’elastico è più potente del martello.
• Quando l’avversario è più debole, dritti. Quando è più forte, in cerchio.
• Il buon combattente ha la mente sgombra e il corpo rilassato.

Io non credo che quanto sopra renda l’idea, ma ti assicuro che vedere in azione il Maestro Yang è impressionante per l’assenza di sforzo con cui si muove (e per la fatica bestiale che fai cercando di imitarlo).

La sua idea di arte marziale mette l’accento sull’arte, e la sua idea di praticante di arti marziali mette l’accento sullo studio, sulla saggezza e sulla rettitudine. Se volete fare risse imparate ad usare il coltello o la pistola, dice. La vera forza non è aggressiva.

La popolarità del presidente è aumentata con questa invasione, e questo mi ricorda la guerra delle isole Falkland.

All’epoca una giunta militare alle corde, con gravi problemi economici e di credibilità, lanciò la guerra soprattutto per distogliere l’attenzione dell’opinione pubblica dai problemi veri dell’Argentina di quei giorni.

La gente scendeva nelle strade compatta sotto la bandiera nazionale gridando “Las Malvinas son argentinas!”, e guarda che non erano mica tutti cafoni ignoranti: ricordo che persone intelligenti, ragionevoli e compassate avevano completamente perso la testa e cucivano centrini bianco-azzurri “per i nostri ragazzi”, e non si perdevano una manifestazione una.

Venne poi il momento del durissimo risveglio, delle lacrime e della rabbia. La giunta militare, che si era comprata qualche mese in più di potere con il sangue dei coscritti, venne spazzata via dalla folla inferocita.
